Day trips form Rome to Villa di Livia and Villa Lante

WHERE THE HENS WERE GROWN UP BY AN EMPRESS

A visit to the suburban Villa of Livia, emperor Augustus’ wife

Your english-speaking driver will pick you up at your hotel in Rome and whisk you away from the chaos of the city

Pliny the Elder narrates that while Livia was going to her plots of land, an eagle dropped an extremely white hen holding a laurel branch with berries in its mouth in her arms; after that, her priests ordered the empress to grow the hen and its offspring and to plant the branch. This happened in the suburban villa on the 9th mile of via (street) Flaminia, where the archeological imposing ruins of the imperial complex still exist.

Visiting the so called ad gallinas albas (“at the white hens”) villa, you will experience how the members of the imperial family used to spend their own spare time, strolling inside relaxing green gardens, laying down in huge painted rooms with colorful inlaid pavements, and bathing in hot water swimming pools.

VILLA LANTE

Vignola’s expression of water games in the fountains
and in the geometries of Italian Gardens

In the afternoon, Guided tour of Villa Lante, considered one of the most remarkable late 16th century buildings in Italy.

In the dense woodlands of the Cimini Hills, Cardinal Riario created a hunting reserve in 1514, the "Barco." Later Bishop Gambara transformed the Barco into a vast Italian-styled park with fountains and a palace with frescoes by Tempesta and Raffaellino Reggio. Cardinal Montalto, who succeded Gambara, ordered a second Palace, frescoed by Tassiand Cavalier d'Arpino.

Natural elements like water, the green of the vegetation, and the stone of the building
are fused together into a single harmonious unit.

The guided tour continues to the hamlet of Vitorchiano, which has its roots in Etruscan times.

Its history is full of disputes against Rome and Viterbo for its independence, until, spontaneously, in the Middle Ages, it swore a solemn submission to Rome
